Guinea-Bissau Guinea-Bissau

Until recently, Guinea-Bissau had a 3-6-3-3 formal education structure. There are still three years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of three and is referred to as ensino pré-primário. Primary school, which is known as ensino básico (primeiro and segundo ciclo), still has an official entry age of six and a duration of six grades. Ensino básico is divided into two cycles: primeiro ciclo, which lasts four years, and segundo ciclo, which lasts two years. At the end of ensino básico (primeiro ciclo), students receive the diploma de ensino basico (primeiro ciclo), and at the end of ensino básico (segundo ciclo), students receive the diploma de ensino básico (segundo ciclo). Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.

Lower secondary, which is known as ensino básico (terceiro ciclo), still consists of grades 7-9 and culminates in the diploma de ensino básico (terceiro ciclo). In the 3-6-3-3 system, upper secondary, which is known as ensino secundário, consisted of grades 10-12 and culminated in the diploma de ensino secundário. In addition, Guinea-Bissau has a lower secondary vocational education track that lasts up to two years, and an upper secondary vocational education track that lasts three years (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2013 school year).
